From synthetic colouring to natural colouring

- 01/01/2023

The unknown usually frightens us. However, it's ironic that the unknown is, in this case, nature. Taking care of yourself through plants is one of the oldest rituals in existence, so overcome your brakes and discover the benefits of caring for your hair in the most natural way there is.

Switching from synthetic to plant-based hair colouring requires, first and foremost, a change of heart. They are the truth, because they don't disguise your natural state of hair, but expose it and provide you with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, as well as, in some cases, tannins that give you colour. Once the plants are in action, the change has begun. Do you want to know how the process works? Let's get started!

1. Raising awareness

This is the very first step to stop a habit that we thought was the only option, the consumption of chemicals-synthetics on our hair, and start discovering a new way to take care of our hair and skin.  Our hair, like our whole body, acts as a container for chemicals. Some have gradually been expelled, but others continue to damage our hair fibres.

Hair is made up of 28% protein, 2% lipids and 70% water, salts and other substances (urea, amino acids, etc.). This tough, fibrous protein, which is also found in the nails, is called keratin. Keratin is responsible for giving consistency and strength to the hair; moisture or water is responsible for hydrating it.

Hair is a strong and elastic fibre. But what happens to it when we use synthetic and aggressive treatments? For example, excessive blow-drying, flat irons, highlights, stretching that changes the hair structure? You know what happens, don't you? On the other hand, the degree of porosity of a hair varies between: porous, slightly porous or extremely porous. When hair is damaged, the cuticle is wounded, it has lost layers of its protective barrier, so it becomes more porous.

2. Patience

We must remedy, yes, but we must also begin to understand the times of nature and adapt to them. And we must be constant so that our change has results. That is why before defining the colour we want in our hair, we must restructure the hair fibres and recover its health, if it is not healthy there is no beautiful colour.

If our hair is damaged by synthetic dyes, before dyeing with a vegetable dye, we will need to add more fats such as first cold-pressed oil to nourish and moisturise the core of the hair and repair its cuticle.

3. Repare and prepare

To prepare your hair, you should follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 of The Henna Morena Method. You can start them at the same time and follow them for at least 1 month, before making the step 4 corresponds precisely to the time of dyeing hair. Read each step in detail to find out what you need to do and what products you need.

4. The perfect formula

When we have our hair well hydrated and ready for the change then, it is time to choose the best colour combination for our hair. You have to keep in mind that plant-based dyes do not work like synthetic dyes. Plants do not lighten the base colour, they dye by depositing. This means that they do not break the cuticle to get into the hair as synthetic dyes do, but are deposited on the hair. The effect is like a coloured varnish, so the base shade will be crucial to the final finish.

The more often you use vegetable hair colour, the more pigment you will have deposited on the hair and the better coverage you will get. Little by little you will become an expert on what colour each plant gives you, what to choose according to your base tone and the result you are looking for.

Our range of plant-based colouring products is made up of 10 formulas that colour in different shades. Chamomile, which gives us golden tones. Henna, copper tones. Indigo, dark browns. And the combination of all of them and some other plants, intermediate tones.

Trusting in nature is trusting in yourself.
