Curly special: learn to listen to your hair
Do you have curly hair and have decided to restore it? Do you want to stop straightening your hair once and for all and give shine to your curls? First of all, you need to know its characteristics so that you can give it the nourishment it needs.
Do you know what curly hair looks like?
The hair follicle of curly hair has an irregular, helix-like shape, which is easily visible from the outside because of the curly shape of the strand. There is a whole range of levels of curl from tighter to more open, and from tighter to tighter. Depending on the products and care we use, the curl can take on a more or less pronounced shape. For example, the way you dry it can change its appearance.
Keys for taking care of your curls
1. Washing & Shampoo
Curly hair, being dry, does not do well with daily washing. Shampoos are designed to remove dirt, but if we abuse them, they can damage our hair. When we use them a lot (more than 1 or 2 times a week) they can remove the natural oils from the hair and, as a consequence, the ends of the hair will be even drier and more brittle.
Which shampoo should a curly use? For regular use we recommend the Honey and Orange Shampoo. If you want to follow The Henna Morena Method, in Step 1 -in which we seek to reset the hair- choose the Cocoa and Shea solid shampoo. Both are emollient and highly nutritious.
If you want to take your wash one step further towards naturalness, we recommend the Shikakai, a 100% natural product, made from Acacia Concinna, has repairing, soothing, regenerating properties and also contains vitamins A, C, K and D.
2. Hydration: + shine, - frizz
Moisturising is synonymous with definition: it is what gives curly hair flexibility and defines the wave. Conditioners and masks are a must in the washing routine, as they complement the cleansing action of the shampoo and, in the case of solid shampoos, seal the hair cuticle. Tip: If you want maximum definition of your curls, apply conditioner as a leave-in on wet hair and don't rinse it out. It's also important to moisturise your hair at home. For us, shea butter oil masks every 15 days are a must for a curly mane.
3. Nutrition
Hair structure determines how the hair is nourished, using the natural oils secreted by the scalp. Since the distribution of natural oils is not uniform in curly hair, the ends are drier. Therefore, the mane will need extra nutrition. What can we give you? Botanical and first cold-pressed oils.
If your hair is damaged by synthetic dyes and you have fine hair, apply Grape Seed and Petit Grain oil: it is a natural antioxidant and very moisturizing. Another option is the Almond Oil with Henna Flower, with a larger fat molecule, ideal for curly and thick hair.
If your hair is very dry and thick, apply Shea Butter, melted in a water bath, once a week. It is an excellent moisturizer that will bring multiple benefits to your skin and hair. If your hair is not only dry, but also damaged by chemical products, treat your hair with the Night Renegerating Serum.
4. Definition
For the curl to be well defined, use products that, in addition to providing nutrition and hydration, they will define it without leaving the hair stiff.
If you have wavy hair use the Moisturizing Serum with Silicon and Jojoba. Silicon is a mineral found in our body that irreversibly decreases as we age. This serum is an instant conditioner with repairing actions. Apply to damp hair for all-day definition without weighing it down.
If you have small, fine curls, use our Aloe Vera Gel with Lavender, a super moisturizing fixing gel with regenerative, toning and soothing properties. Its fixing effect shapes the curls wet and dry, avoiding frizz. Leaves the curl defined without a stiff effect.
If you have afro hair, use our Orange and Shea Conditioner as a leave in. Apply to wet hair and leave on leave-in hair. It will give you nutrition and definition.
5. ALWAYS use a vegetable dye
If you want to color your hair it is important that you do it with a vegetable dye. Why? Because in addition to providing a beautiful and natural color, it respects the hair structure, covering it without damaging it. On the other hand, if you apply a synthetic dye, it penetrates the hair structure, oxidizes it and, in addition to dyeing you, weakens the hair. In the case of curly hair, this damage is greater since the hair structure is usually more weakened.
6. Forget the brush: use a comb
Always comb, never brush: brushes tend to break the hair and take away the shape of the curl. Curly-haired friends, a natural wood combs is your alli.
