False myths of Henna

- 01/13/2020

Are you also one of those who still believe that Henna will leave your hair green? You can breathe easy now, because the answer is NO. Does Henna break the curl? No. Does Henna lighten hair? Again, no.

These and many other erroneous beliefs about Henna appeared in the 1960s, when the hippie movement incorporated some of the traditions of the Eastern world into Western society. Among them was the use of Henna, both on the skin and hair. The use of low quality henna, mixed with chemicals and applied carelessly on any type of hair, led to bad results that were far from reality and created myths. It is time to debunk them!

Henna dries the hair

NO. Henna does not dry out the hair, in fact, our vegetable hair colouring is also a nourishing and moisturising treatment for the hair. It provides nutrients, minerals and vitamins that strengthen our hair as well as colouring it. However, due to its astringent properties, which come from the tannins, it can cause the hair to "tighten" after application. That's why we always recommend repairing the hair and preparing the colouring with 3-4 tablespoons of hair oil that will coat the hair cuticle and deeply moisturise it. You will see how your hair shines, and takes on a body like you have never noticed before.

There are different shades of Henna

NO. There is only one Henna and it dyes in a coppery colour. However, in our range of vegetable colouring we have different shades. How is this possible? In addition to Henna, there are other plants that have colouring properties such as Walnut, Indigo or Chamomile. Mixing them in the right way with Henna, they will provide different tones. Here we show you the available tones.

If you have dark hair put on "black henna"!

NO. Beware! Black Henna" does not exist naturally. The black Henna for hair that you find on the market is a mixture of Henna with paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a very dangerous mixture for your health as it has a high sensitising power and induces allergic contact dermatitis. With prolonged use, black henna can cause cross-allergies with some medications and lead to fatal reactions. Our recommendation is that you NEVER use black Henna and that you ALWAYS look closely at the Henna you are using. Make sure it is 100% pure Henna, like ours

Henna breaks the curl

NO. On the contrary, Henna pigments the hair without opening the cuticle and provides multiple vitamins, minerals and nutrients beneficial for curly and afro hair.

Henna creates greasy hair

NO. This is a super false myth! Henna helps to control the production of oil on the scalp, so hair with this problem benefits greatly from its use. We recommend our special Rosemary and Sage infused Henna formula for oily hair.

Henna lightens hair

NO. Vegetable dyes, unlike synthetic dyes, dye by deposition, coating the hair structure as if it were a varnish with a little colour. They do not penetrate into the deep layers of the hair, such as the cortex (which contains melanin) or the medulla and therefore cannot homogenise or lighten the tone.

Henna must be applied on clean hair.

NO. It is better to apply Henna on dirty (or not freshly washed) hair because this way the hair keeps its natural oils, which are beneficial for a better adherence of the colour.

The use of Henna is forbidden during pregnancy.

NO. On the contrary, the use of Henna as a natural hair dye is a fantastic alternative to conventional hair dyes during pregnancy. It does not contain aggressive substances such as ammonia or hydrogen peroxide, it is a plant used in traditional medicine, it does not break the hair structure and it also provides multiple vitamins and minerals to the hair. Make sure it is 100% natural, unadulterated Henna, like ours.
