Is your hair color fading in summer? Keep it vibrant with these tips
Summer is synonymous with sun, sea, and pool… but it can also be a challenge for our hair! Exposure to the sun, chlorine, salt, or drastic temperature changes can accelerate color loss and damage the hair fiber — because we wash our hair more frequently, sometimes without considering what we’re applying to it, etc. It affects all hair types, but clearly, if you also dye your hair with synthetic coloring, the damage will be much more noticeable.
Several factors influence color change, but generally speaking, each one — to a greater or lesser extent — degrades the pigments, dries out the hair fiber, and contributes to color fading. Hair porosity and even color also play a big role: blondes have less natural protection, as the pigment that gives light hair its color (pheomelanin) offers less sun protection than eumelanin, which is present in darker hair.
However, there’s good news: we’ll show you simple and effective ways to care for your hair so it maintains its color and shine all season long.
1. Cover your hair, protect it from radiation
If possible, avoid excessive use of hair dryers and straighteners during the summer. Protect yourself from the sun with a hat or scarf — not only stylish, but your best ally in preventing sun damage.
2. Rinse with fresh water
Chlorine and salt dehydrate and alter the outer layer of your hair. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water: this reduces the absorption of salty or chlorinated water. Afterwards, rinse again with fresh water — it will noticeably reduce dryness. Bring a spray bottle or a bottle of fresh water if showers won’t be available nearby.
3. Wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoos
This is a must. Wash your hair with a gentle, natural liquid shampoo that removes residue without irritating your scalp. Sulfate-free shampoos are ideal, as sulfates strip away natural oils more quickly, accelerating color loss. We recommend any of our gentle liquid shampoos, but especially the Henna and Silicon Shampoo for its remineralizing effect, which helps keep color vibrant for longer.
4. Apply masks three times a week
Now is the time for intensive hydration. Regular use of conditioners and masks will keep your hair hydrated, protected, and healthier. After sun exposure, dyed hair is much more prone to dryness, damage, and fading. Use a conditioner every time you wash your hair and hair masks at least three times a week. Remember to leave masks on for about 20 minutes — you’ll feel how they protect and seal the cuticle.
5. Take care of your diet
The health of your hair doesn’t only depend on what you apply externally. Exercise regularly to release endorphins (yes, they benefit your hair too) and follow a diet rich in essential fatty acids: include flaxseed oil, seeds, nuts, avocado, oily fish, and leafy green vegetables.
