Powder cosmetics: The only 100% unprocessed plant-based cosmetics
Did you know that hundreds of years ago, plants were already used to treat hair? Powder treatments are not a modern invention; our ancestors used them. We still trust in plants, and in this article, we'll tell you how they nourish our hair. Let's get started!
We are fans of powder cosmetics. Why? Because it's pure nature. Basically, they are just fresh plants dried and crushed, without any additives or additional ingredients. You can apply them like a poultice to let your hair absorb all their benefits as a great energy boost.
At Henna Morena, we insist that hydration is a fundamental step in hair recovery. However, once that phase is over, it's the best time to nourish and strengthen your hair. You're now ready to apply plant and mineral powder treatments!
What are the essential powder treatments for your hair? Undoubtedly, Walnut and Cassia Obovata.
Keep in mind that these plants have an astringent effect, so you should apply them after you have restored the hair cuticle and gone through the intensive hydration phase (treatments with hair oils, post-wash masks, or overnight serum), following the Henna Morena Method guide.
POWDER SUPERFOODS
Both Cassia Obovata and Walnut coat and protect the hair cuticle, providing essential nutrients with numerous properties and benefits. They help:
- Strengthen hair and roots: stronger, more body, less breakage.
- Improve shine and silky texture, acting on hair keratin by reinforcing its structure and enhancing natural color.
- Prevent hair loss due to the high content of L-arginine, an amino acid that aids scalp circulation.
- Regulate dry or oily hair by balancing the scalp's pH.
Both treatments should be applied monthly as a reinforcement to your hair care routine.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CASSIA OBOVATA AND WALNUT
Both plants share properties, with the main difference being that Walnut is suitable for brown hair, as it contains natural tannins that lightly tint it brown. You will enhance your natural brown tone. For other hair colors, we recommend Cassia Obovata.
Walnut or Juglans regia is a tree rich in natural naphthoquinones (juglone), a type of tannins found in its leaves. It is also rich in polyphenols, potent antioxidants that react with hair protein. These two natural components, present in the leaves, have a very mild pigmentation effect on dark tones.
Cassia Obovata, also known as Cassia Italica, is a leguminous plant with yellow flowers that provides properties similar to Henna (Lawsonia Inermis) but without coloring. It is ideal for all hair types.
HOW TO PREPARE THESE TREATMENTS?
Both Walnut and Cassia Obovata should be prepared with hot watter. Once the mixture has a hot chocolate-like texture, add 3 or 4 tablespoons of one of our oils to provide healthy fats.
Walnut powder has a slightly more granulated texture than Cassia Obovata, so when preparing and applying your poultice, you'll notice a sandy feel. This is because Walnut powder is obtained by crushing the leaves and bark of the tree, and the texture is different from simply crushing leaves or flowers. If you feel dry bits coming off when applying the mixture to your hair, don't worry—it's normal and doesn't affect the result.
POWDER TREATMENTS AND COLORING
Powder treatments are great allies for coloring; they help treat and hydrate the hair before dyeing. Additionally, both Walnut and Cassia Obovata can be mixed with Henna.
In the case of mixing Walnut with any of our 4 Hennas: Nettle and Thyme infusion, Black Tea, Cinnamon, and Hibiscus infusion, Rosemary and Sage infusion, or Lavender and Orange Blossom infusion, it will give your brown hair a subtle coppery hue, less intense. However, the intensity of the coppery tone will depend on the proportions of each ingredient.
For Cassia Obovata, you can mix it with any of our 4 hennas or with Chamomile. Since it doesn't add color, it helps reduce the intensity of the pigmented plants.
