Taking care of your hair without harming the sea
In recent months it seems that we have learned to become aware of our personal care. We have learned to eat better, to cook, to take care of our hair, to sleep better, to play sports at home... At the beginning of the pandemic it seemed that the Earth celebrated our stillness and we, the pure air that was breathed in the cities.
May the pandemic help us to truly become aware. Not only in how to improve our physical appearance, but also in taking care of everything we leave behind. And we are not only talking about the waste that we can see, but about those that we cannot see.
Microplastics or microspheres are millimeter particles (less than 5 millimeters) that have been found since the 1980s in products such as: toothpaste, detergents, broad-spectrum cosmetics (exfoliating cleansers, protective solar...), synthetic clothing fibers, etc. They are usually made of plastics such as polyethylene, polyvinyl, polypropylene or polystyrene and their size makes them undetectable by sewage treatment plants and water treatment facilities. In this way, plastic particles reach the sea, affecting marine flora and fauna.
Greenpeace estimates that 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean each year. Between 2002 and 2013, the annual production of plastic worldwide increased by almost 50%, from 204 million to 299 million tons. Much of the volume of plastics in the oceans is made up of microplastics that often come from the fragmentation of larger objects as they degrade.
One of the most important measures is to take responsibility for the waste we generate. There are also small actions that can contribute to improving the situation of Nature:
- When you go to the beach, avoid as much as possible putting creams, gels, foams or other products on yur hair.
- Protect your hair with a hat and use an umbrella.
- When you get out of the water, rinse your hair with sweet water. Sea water has many beneficial properties for the body, but it can also irritate our skin and dry out our hair.
- Care for the hair pre and post-beach. Maintain a weekly hydration routine using these 3 basics: botanical hair oil masks to hydrate the hair overnight, Shea Butter to nourish the skin and hair after a sunbath, Aloe Vera and Lavender Gel for the skin and to shape and moisturize the hair.
When preparing your bag to go on vacation think about what impact do the products you use have on the environment? Can you reduce your ecological footprint?
