Truth and lies about natural dyes
Truth and lies about natural dyes
Does henna make hair green? And orange? Can a vegetable dye lighten blonde hair? Can we control the tone of the pigmenting plants on our hair? There are still doubts surrounding vegetable coloring and the time has come to resolve them and disprove myths.
Since we launched Henna Morena we have not stopped receiving thousands of messages in which you ask us all kinds of questions regarding vegetable dyes and, specifically, Henna. Many doubts arise when looking at vegetable cosmetics with synthetic color as a reference. Others, as a result of those popular myths that are so difficult to reverse.
We still have a long way to go when it comes to vegetable coloration, which is why our mission is to make its virtues known and, this time specifically, to resolve all your doubts so that you can take the step towards nature with a conscience.
Let's go with the truths and lies of vegetable coloring.
“NATURAL DYES DO NOT COVER GRAY HAIR”
Natural dyes do cover gray hair but without unifying the color with the rest of the hair. Plant dyes cover gray hair a shade lower than your natural tone, nuanced and creating a very beautiful natural reflection. Depending on your natural color and the formula you choose, you will get one tone or another.
“ALL THE HENNAS DYE IN THE SAME COLOR”
No, our 10 formulas dye in 7 different tones, from dark brown to blonde. Depending on your natural shade and the colour you have when you dye your hair, the shade will vary slightly from the shade of the formula you have chosen.
“NATURAL DYES DRY YOUR HAIR”
No, it does not dry out the hair. On the contrary: our coloring formulas treat the hair thanks to all the properties that Henna and the rest of the plants that we use to create our natural formulas have. In addition, by preparing the dye with the oil and infusion that we include, you will see how the hair shines, and takes on a body that you have never noticed before.
“THE ONLY PLANT THAT DYES IS HENNA”
False, it also dyes Indigo, Chamomile, Walnut... also flowers such as Hibiscus, or even wine! This is our range of vegetable dyes.
“VEGETABLE COLORING IS SYNONYMOUS OF COPPER”
No! At Henna Morena we offer you different formulas to choose from depending on your natural tone that go beyond copper. You can see how each one will lookaquí.
“PLANTS LIGHTEN THE HAIR”
False. Plants do not have the ability to lighten hair, because this requires an oxidative process that damages the cuticle. Plants do the opposite: they improve your health in addition to dyeing.
“I CAN'T DYE MYSELF WITH VEGETABLE DYES IF I HAVE BLEACHED HAIR”
False. You can apply vegetable color to bleached hair, but first you need to repair the hair cuticle oxidized by synthetic dyes (we recommend oil masks for at least 1 month before dyeing with vegetable color). You should also know that vegetable dyes, by respecting the structure of the hair, cannot erase the color that you have underneath or homogenize the tone.
“THE VEGETABLE COLORING BREAKS THE CURL”
Not at all! On the contrary, vegetable coloring pigments the hair without opening the cuticle and provides multiple vitamins, minerals and beneficial nutrients for curly and afro hair. Remember that it is important to mix your vegetable color with a first cold pressed hair oil, so the hair will be more hydrated and the color will hold better.
